Homemade Gumpaste

    1 envelope (1/4oz.) unflavored gelatin
    1/2 cup water
    1 tsp. cream of tarter
    4 cups powdered sugar
    1 cup cornstarch

Place gelatin, water and cream of tartar on low heat and stir.

When dissolved, add powdered sugar and cornstarch. Work like pie dough. Use cornstarch to prevent sticking.

Variation: Cook the gelatin and 1/2 cup of cornstarch with the water. This makes a gloopy paste. Add powder sugar until it forms a smooth dough. This makes for a slightly more translucent product. Note: do not try using regular Jell-o or Kool-Aid (for flavoring). The acid in these products breaks down the gum paste. Frosting color may be added, as well as Cocoa powder.
