Why did my royal icing flake off?
« on: December 20, 2016, 06:24:40 pm »
For the first time, I made my gingerbread houses without a kit.  After the houses were complete, the light layer of royal icing I used on the roofs started to flake off.  The houses were fine for about 3 weeks and now the decorations on the roof are all over the floor.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

Would you be able to post a quick photo of the problem.  I would like to help but since there a number of factors that can cause the issue you describe a photo would be helpful if possible. The Royal Icing may have been too stiff/dry when it was piped on, it may not have dried properly due to humidity or it's also possible that your decorations were not 'structurally sound' (for example, if you pipe a long string of Royal Icing, it will often crack unless it has sufficient thickness to support itself.  Hope this helps.

Regards,
-Adam

I took a picture of the roof.  This has happened to both of my houses.  One of the houses, the entire side of the roof slipped off.  I did these houses at the end of November.  Thanks for any help.
